why people are morons [Jun. 13th, 2007|06:11 pm]
Here's the transcript of a conversation I had with a guy at work today:

Man: What's the price of your liquid chlorine?
Me: It's $10.99 a case plus a 5 dollar deposit.
Man: *looks confused*
Me: You know, you bring back the empty bottles and you get the 5 dollars back?
Man: I don't get it...don't you normally just throw out those bottles?
Me: *exasperated* You bring them back, we give you 5 dollars.
Man: Oh so you mean there's like a 5 dollar deposit?

What I wanted to say was "DUH, HAVEN'T YOU BEEN LISTENING?".

Why are people such idiots?

So I'm thinking I might not update this thing very much anymore.

Will that upset anyone?

Yeah, I thought not.

it's more than a feeling, when I hear that song they used to play... [Jun. 3rd, 2007|06:28 pm]
[Current Mood | chipper]
[Current Music |More Than A Feeling- Boston]

So I got a new job. At Ace Swim and Leisure. Take that, Leslie's.

I started a little over a week ago, and I definitely like it. I worked 36 hours this past week, and I make 1% of everything I sell. I think that makes up for the difference in pay between Ace and Leslie's. Plus, the manager at Ace is a much nicer person and the environment there is just different. I get the feeling that the sales guys actually WANT to be there, and at Leslie's I always felt like people hated being there. Plus Ace makes a lot of money selling pools, and they have 3 dedicated sales guys, so even if we're not busy, they still need me to sit around in case customers come in.

So I'm happy with that. And my internship is going well. I'm pretty much personally responsible for loading in a few radio shows and I get to do a lot of other stuff. 100.5 debuted the entire new Maroon 5 album on the air before it came out in stores, and I put all the songs into the computer. Then my sister listened to it that night and it felt cool knowing that I helped get that on the radio. I get to do a lot of music related stuff, and I've met a few of the morning DJ's. It's all cool and fun and I like it a lot.

Summer has been busy so far, and I'm not miserable this time. Sure, I miss Josh, but I'm working all the time so it goes by fast. And I get to see him in 33 days.

I went to the drive-in last night with Erin, Patty and Laura to see Pirates of the Caribbean 3. It was fun, and the movie was enjoyable. I also saw Erin and Patty earlier in the week. We taught Patty how to play Guitar Hero. It was amusing, but she caught on fast. And I saw Emily. We screened our version of Harry Potter 5. It went over well, I must say.

Things are off to a good start this summer. I haven't seen Nick and Chris yet, but plans will definitely be made. And that is a promise.

grades [May. 26th, 2007|07:53 am]
[Current Mood | tired]

Intro to Journalism: A
Quantitative Mass Media Research Methods: A
Environmental Economics: A
Sound Design: A
Media Writing: A-

Damn Media Writing bringing down my GPA and all (j/k).

So I got a new job and I quit Leslie's yesterday. And this is the busiest weekend of the year for the pool industry. Sucks to be them. My friend Brian works at Leslie's and he said the manager was pissed. Serves him right. He knew I wasn't happy with the hours and yet he still didn't see it coming.

What an arrogant jerk.

too lazy to come up with a title [May. 20th, 2007|10:18 pm]
[Current Mood | pissed off]

So I've been home for about a week. It's had its ups and downs.

I haven't had too much time to be bored so far. We got home last Saturday and I spent most of Saturday and a lot of Sunday unpacking. Then I spent pretty much the rest of the week applying for jobs.

I started my internship at Clear Channel on Wednesday and so far I like it. I get to do actual stuff, and it's fun. Most of what I've been doing is loading shows and recording stuff and checking voice-tracking and other stuff. Most of my work has been for 95.1 The Fox (classic rock), and some of it's just been really strange. There's a guy from Boston who does the afternoon show, so he records all his talking and sends it to us (so no, he's not live). I have to play through it all before it goes on-air and make sure everything is there and it sounds ok. So on Wednesday I played through all his talk-sets for the afternoon, and I got in the car and tuned into 95.1 and I heard some of the stuff I had played through. It was really odd. Somehow that takes the fun out of listening to the radio.

Although that's been great, work at Leslie's has sucked. I didn't have a chance to go fill out my paperwork until Monday, and the manager wasn't in until Thursday and it didn't count until he signed it. So he had to sign it and they had to mail it out on Friday, meaning they'd get it back on Monday, at which point the schedule would already be made so I couldn't work for another week. Luckily that wasn't the case, and they let me start yesterday.

So that was ok, except for when the schedule was made and it said I was working 32 hours this coming week and I realized that it didn't add up. I finally figured out it was because the manager had accidentally scheduled me for midnight this coming Saturday (instead of noon). When I told him about it, he fixed it and I asked if I could work more than the 19 hours it added up to. He said no, that this is what he told me in March and that this is what I should expect. I said no, he told me more like 30. He said to me "look, do you want the job or not?" That really pissed me off and now I want another job. Except for I worked today and everything was back to normal. Leslie's would be great if I could get more like 30 hours, but it's just not good enough.

So I'm continuing to apply everywhere and I'm following up on the stuff from last week. I don't even know what to think or what to hope for. But I went to the Lilac Festival with Laura on Friday, and that was fun. Breakfast with Sarah and her mom yesterday was also enjoyable. I may be hanging out with Erin later this week and I definitely want to see Patty when she gets home.

I'm just pissed off because other than my internship, summer is kind of sucking and I'm pissed at Leslie's.

we belong together like traffic and weather... [May. 13th, 2007|04:39 pm]
[Current Mood | hungry]
[Current Music |Traffic and Weather- Fountains of Wayne]

So I'm back in Rochester. But I have a litte story to tell everyone.

Saturday night, 4:00 in the morning the fire alarm in my dorm went off. (The last time that happened it took me a good 5 minutes to realize that it was the fire alarm). This time I knew what it was right away, so I get up, put my glasses and shoes on, grab my sweatshirt and keys and leave. There were police officers out in the hall directing us to one of the stairwells, which I thought was kind of odd.

So I get outside and I'm wondering why it smells like smoke, and I look, and the dumpster is on fire! I just stared at it until one of the police officers told me to walk farther down the road. We were outside for probably 15 minutes and the firetrucks came and everything and it was 45 degrees out and I had shorts on and I was freezing. Not a good way to end the semester.

My building is also built kind of odd. There are doors on the ground floor and you have to walk up a short flight of stairs before you get to the actual rooms. The rooms hang out over the access road, so it's nice when you're moving in and it's raining out because you can park underneath the building and not get drenched. But the dumpster and recycle bins are also located under the building. So the fire in the dumpster scorched the outside walls and ceiling. And because of the rooms hanging out over the road, the firetrucks couldn't fit up the road. Poor planning there.

What scares me about the entire thing is this: somebody had to have called the police about the dumpster fire, and the police must have pulled the fire alarm. I left my room literally 30 seconds after the fire alarm went off, and the officers were already in the halls. Usually when the fire alarm goes off it takes them a good few minutes to get there. So if someone hadn't seen the fire and called it in, how long would it have taken before either 1. the building started burning or 2. smoke got inside and triggered the fire alarm?

What a stupid, awful prank. There is a theory that a group of people lighting fireworks on the second floor balcony may have lit the dumpster on fire, but I kind of doubt it. There's no way the fireworks could have gone from the balcony to the dumpster. Some drunk person must have thought it would be a fun way to end the semester, and it looked like gasoline was involved, since the entire top layer of trash was burning pretty evenly. It was just a dumb joke and I really don't think the person who did it thought about all the people who could have been hurt, and what might have happened if somebody hadn't called in the fire.

So yeah, what a way to end the year.

no time for a summer friend, no time for the love you send, seasons change and so did I... [May. 10th, 2007|06:35 pm]
[Current Mood | calm]
[Current Music |the sounds of the photo lab]

So I'll be back in Rochester this Saturday.

It's been an interesting year, that's for sure.

Good things:

Environmental Studies minor
Being happy with my major, finally
Radio
WICB, doing Monday Morning Drive
Radio Production
Hawaii
Sustainable Living Community
Bill Ressler (best professor EVER)
Summer internship with Clear Channel
4.0 last semester
ICTV show
Josh

Bad things:

Dad getting "downsized"
Radio Production
My obnoxious neighbor
Environmental Studies classes not being offered
Media Writing
Stress
Politics
People sucking
Not seeing Josh for 4 months

Overall, I believe there were more goods than bads there. It's been a great year, for the most part. My semester doing Radio Production for WICB was interesting and I learned more than I ever learned in class, but overall being treated like shit was just not good. I'm glad I don't have to deal with radio crap (besides just regular DJing and that's not crap) again next year. That'll be a huge relief.

And I got an internship doing programming and production for Clear Channel this summer. It'll be awesome, except for the part where I have to pay the school to do an un-paid internship. Lame.

The worst part is, all semester I've been saying how much I wanted to go home. Now that I'm down to the end and I have two days left, all I want to do is stay here. I've been so happy with Josh this year and our relationship has developed so much, but now I have to say goodbye to him for 4 months. I'm visiting him in July and he's living across the hall from me next year, but still.

I've decided that this summer WILL be better than last summer. I definitely need to start using the treadmill and riding my bike because I'm way out of shape. And if I get bored, I'm volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House and I want to hang out with all my friends as much as possible. I miss you guys! And I have a ton of footage from Hawaii to edit into a movie, so that'll be fun.

Finals week has been relaxing. I've worked a total of 13 hours, which is awesome because I need the money. I have 3 "finals" but they've all been discussions since everything had final projects. 10 page paper for Media Writing, 5 pages for Economics, a project for another class I'm taking, a project and quiz for Journalism, and 50+ sound cues for the play we designed for Sound Design. My grades are promising, though, but I won't post them until I know them all.

Unfortunately the weather has been gorgeous with the exception of today, and I haven't been able to go out and enjoy it because of those 13 hours of work. I went to the Ithaca Science Center with Josh today, which was super fun. We also went for a walk through one of the gorges here last Saturday. It was very pretty and we went back today to take pictures which I'll post later.

That's it for now. As soon as I get home I'm starting work again, but I want to see people, so I will be calling you guys. Expect it!

you sit there in your heartache, waiting on some beautiful boy to save you from your old ways... [Apr. 25th, 2007|09:00 pm]

[Current Music |When You Were Young- The Killers]

There are some people who I just downright hate. They REALLY make me frustrated.

Like this one kid, for instance. Let's call him Sam*.

To be blunt (not a pun, at all), Sam is a pothead. From what I hear, he's high all the time. On the night before 4/20, he skipped his TV show to get ready. Now who does that? (only 3/4 of Ithaca, but still)

People like that make me angry, solely because they're here at Ithaca College. Somebody, probably their parents, is paying $40,000 a year for them to come waste their time, money, and brain cells. And what makes me more angry is that, chances are, there is someone who didn't get into IC who really wishes they had. And they could have gotten in, if the school hadn't accepted someone like Sam. Not that I'm not blaming the school; there was no way they could have known. Someone like Sam, who doesn't really care that they're here, is wasting EVERYONE else's time and money. Somebody who really wants to be here, who would have really worked hard, isn't here because of some jackass like Sam.

I know I'm repeating myself but I don't care.

And it's even worse when those jackasses like Sam have a scholarship! In addition to their parents, some scholarship fund is paying for them to come here and waste their time.

People like Sam just don't get it. They're not here to try or do work or learn things, they're here to screw around and waste everybody else's precious oxygen. And those are the kind of people who just sort of slide by in life. They'll get by because other people end up doing all the work. And then when they have no job and are on welfare, guess who's paying for them? That's right, we are - those of us who actually TRIED in college and didn't waste our time and money getting high every other second of the day.

It really makes me angry. I know there are SO many other problems in the world, but this is one of those little personal things that just makes me downright angry.

In other news, I'm coming home May 12th. 17 days away...

So yeah, I'm coming home in less than 3 weeks. I can't say I'm not looking forward to it.

I have a ton of stuff due in the next week and a half....I've been INCREDIBLY bad at planning things this semester.

And people who start off a conversation with "yo dude" annoy me (i.e. my neighbors).

People who feel obligated to stop in the middle of a hallway and block traffic also annoy me.

So do people who walk incredibly slowly and then you can't get around them.

Lots of other things annoy me, too. But I'm not posting them here.
